If it is one, I've never heard of it. As far as I know giving flowers to someone isn't really a common thing in Japan, even on Valentines day the common thing is giving chocolate to people (and if they are special people you make the chocolate yourself). Cut flowers, especially things like orchids, are expensive and hard to get in Japan.

Hey, Nik, I have an unrelated question for you: Is it a Japanese cultural tradition for a man to send orchids to another man as a professional gesture of appreciation or gratitude? I was watching an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" last night where Larry got a bouquet of orchids from his Japanese acupuncturist and he immediately wondered if it was homosexually motivated. It was very funny, but it made me wonder if it really IS some kind of tradition.

Next time you see him ask him if he means Shigaraki. Its a famous town that's about an hour away from here and they are renowned around Japan for making ceramic tanukis as well as other kinds of ceramics. There aren't any famous pottists in Hikone that I'm aware of.
