On my way to Hokkaido!!!!
I’m leaving for Hokkaido in (as of now) 19 hours!! As such, I won’t be online for the next couple of days (unless our hotel has wireless, which I highly doubt). The official website for the Sapporo snow festival is here, and you can see what all of the large snow sculptures are going to look like, as well as find out that there is a snow labyrinth and 100m snow slide!! Woo!
And no, I’m not going to get injured while skiing! Don’t worry!!!

your so lucky that you get to go to that snow festival! i remember last year or the year before they had a segment about it on the food channel and it looked really cool!! oh, and have you seen any pottery stores/makers where you are? my pottery teacher guy at GRCC said that there is a really world renounded pottist working there, i even asked him if he meant the other city that has they similar name and he said no, that it was in a tiny city…so i think that its there! have you seen or heard of anything like that? i think i remember his name being tadashi…something but thats all i can remember! love you

Next time you see him ask him if he means Shigaraki. Its a famous town that’s about an hour away from here and they are renowned around Japan for making ceramic tanukis as well as other kinds of ceramics. There aren’t any famous pottists in Hikone that I’m aware of.

Hey, Nik, I have an unrelated question for you: Is it a Japanese cultural tradition for a man to send orchids to another man as a professional gesture of appreciation or gratitude? I was watching an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” last night where Larry got a bouquet of orchids from his Japanese acupuncturist and he immediately wondered if it was homosexually motivated. It was very funny, but it made me wonder if it really IS some kind of tradition.

If it is one, I’ve never heard of it. As far as I know giving flowers to someone isn’t really a common thing in Japan, even on Valentines day the common thing is giving chocolate to people (and if they are special people you make the chocolate yourself). Cut flowers, especially things like orchids, are expensive and hard to get in Japan.
