The Japanese obsession with packaging
Buying food in Japan is a fairly arduous task, since there is nothing here that resembles American food, and even if I find something, reading what it is in Japanese is a difficult task. So when I do find food that I want to buy, I always bring it home and open it up and find everything to be individually wrapped. Its starting to get to the point where I’m not sure why I’m even surprised anymore. Here are some examples:
Opening up the bag of pancake mix a week ago, I started to pour some into a measuring cup, and when nothing came out, I opened up the bag further to find 4 individually wrapped bags of pancake mix inside of the larger bag. So if you want more than 4 10cm pancakes, you have to open two bags of batter! Then, the other day I took a trip out to a store about 30 minutes away from here to seek out tortillas. While there I also found some nice saltine crackers! The boxes are 1/2 the size of the square boxes you find in the states, so I figured I’d get it home and open it up to find 2 bags of crackers inside of the box. What did I find? Individually wrapped bags of 6 crackers each! Why six? Who knows……

I think, to keep out humidity, both of the items are
wrapped for each of small portions.
The underlying reason… If I could generalize,
1. Japanese have smaller stomach and appetite.
2. Single people in Japan usually live alone.
(Even students rarely share rooms/house.)
3. People prefer foods wrapped/packed in a smaller size or
quantity, so that they won’t remain any and still keep
the rest fresh.
Tortillas and Salsa are rare in Japan yet, but I think
they will be popular for the good taste in future.
